Background

Scope and content:

The Stanford University, Publications and Ephemera Collection includes publications, printed matter, and ephemera documenting Stanford University. The major subjects represented are history of the founders and the university; administration; faculty; academic schools; graduate schools of law, medicine, and business; libraries; interdepartmental programs; athletics; students; alumni; and special topics, including local history.

Biographical / historical:

This collection represents one of the earliest attempts to catalog historical materials in the University Archives after its founding in 1965, and was historically also known as the "4-Digit" collection due to the four digit code assigned to materials following the original subject framework.

Beginning in 2021, the collection was reprocessed in order to improve access to the full range of materials included. Series and container numbers were added to the container listing, and additional detail on contents was provided. Likewise, some materials were separated into other collections to improve discovery.

Arrangement:

Series 1 includes materials that were part of the original Publications and Ephemera collection prior to the reorganization. Series 2 includes materials that were processed after 2018, as part of the reorganization project. As of 2025, the collection is closed to new accessions.
