Biographical / historical:

The Standing Orders of the Regents establishes the Academic Senate as the governmental body for the University. The responsibilities and powers of the Academic Senate include: determining the conditions for admission and degrees; authorizing and supervising all courses of instruction except for the graduate level courses at professional schools; managing the campus budget; and overseeing the library facilities and the University Press.

The Committee on Teaching bestows awards to professors, such as Distinguished Teaching Assistant Awards, and Departmental Instructional Improvement Awards. The committee receives nominations for recipients of distinguished teaching awards and recommends to the UCLA Alumni Association five members of the Division for awards. At least one award shall be given to a member of non-tenure rank and one award shall be given for distinction in teaching at the graduate level. The committee is also responsible for advising the division and departments with regard to policies that will enlarge the possibilities for distinguished teaching and improve the quality of instruction, including methods of evaluation of teaching.
