Abstract:
A double-spaced typed report of 135 pages titled: "Pfefferkorn Study. [Los Angeles County General Hospital]". National League of Nursing Education, New York. Blanche Pfefferkorn, at the time Director, Department of Studies, National League of Nursing Education, conducted a study of the nursing service provided in the Los Angeles County Hospital and the Los Angeles Osteopathic Hospital; and, since student nurses from the County General Hospital School of Nursing were receiving clinical training in the institution, the School of Nursing is included in the report's recommendations.

The report's Table-of-Contents lists these sections: Preliminary Statement. I. Introduction. II. The Los Angeles County Hospital. III. The Los Angeles Osteopathic Hospital. IV. The organization of nursing in the Los Angeles County General Hospital. V. General summary and recommendations. Appendix. List of Tables.

The Preliminary Statement and the Appendix are missing from this copy of the report, as are almost all of the Tables. After the first 25 pages, the page numbers indicated in the Table-of-Contents no longer match the copy's pagination.

Biographical / historical:

Blanche Pfefferkorn (1884-1961) received her nursing diploma from the Johns Hopkins Hospital Nurses' Training School in 1911, and a BS degree from Columbia University in 1916. In 1928 she earned an MA in educational research from Columbia Teachers College.

Pfefferkorn served as director of studies for the National League of Nursing Education for 17 years. As a pioneer in professional nursing research, she published a number of books and journal articles that had wide influence in the development of standards in nursing education and nursing service. She also contributed much time and effort to both local and national professional organizations.
