These papers, dating from 1937-1980, pertain primarily to his professional career at Stanford; included are correspondence, manuscripts, papers, lectures, minutes, memoranda, photographs, and teaching materials. Scientific subjects include aerodynamics, materials, engineering mechanics, aircraft structure, and the theory of shells. Manuscripts include an edited typescript of his book Stresses in Shells and a typescript for a book on aerodynamics. There are several files of correspondence with the publisher and contribution authors of Handbook of Engineering Mechanics. Also included is an edited typescript by his wife Irmgard Flügge-Lotz entitled Theory of Discontinuous Automatic Control.

Wilhelm Flügge, internationally known specialist in engineering mechanics, is best known for his research on shell structures. He came to Stanford University in 1948 as an associate professor of mechanical engineering. Prior to World War II, he taught at Gottingen University in Germany, specializing in aerodynamics. During the 1966-67 academic year, Flügge received a Fullbright scholarship to conduct research at the University of Kyoto, Japan. In 1970, he was awarded the Theodore V. Karman Medal, conferred by the Engineering Mechanics Division of the American Socie of Civil Engineers.
