Background
- Scope and content:

Santa Fe Springs City Library's historical photograph collection includes items of historical interest dating from the 1880s through 1960. Images document commercial, residential, and public buildings; the oil industry that flourished in the area; the home and gardens that would become the basis for a large City park; pioneering families and business; local schools; the construction of the Irving-Gill designed Clarke Estate; and the incorporation and beginning years of Santa Fe Springs. Formats include aerial and panoramic photographs. Photographs primarily document founding families, the oil industry, and city life. Of particular interest are photographs pertaining to the construction of the Clarke Estate and the Nimock's house and gardens, the photographs of which were used to reconstruct the buildings and gardens for use as a City park.
Items were selected from a wide array of photographs housed at Heritage Park and the Clarke Estate, both in Santa Fe Springs. Items were chosen for the collection based on their historical importance to the city, their ability to project information about the specific time period reflected in the photograph, and their ability to adequately reflect city life.
- Acquisition information:
- This collection was created by the Santa Fe Springs City Library staff from 2006-2007 as part of the Local History Digital Resources Project.
- Processing information:
-
These photographs were assembled from an array of photographs housed at Heritage Park and the Clarke Estate, both in Santa Fe Springs. They were digitized in order to provide access to the historical photographs, especially by K-12 students and teachers in the community from their classrooms. A foundational virtual collection of digital image objects was created which are available to the public through the California Digital Library's (CDL) Calisphere website (see http://www.calisphere.universityofcalifornia.edu/).
This project was part of the California Local History Digital Resources Project (LHDRP), a program supported by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered by the California State Library. LHDRP explores a model to aggregate, preserve, and provide permanent public access to local history digital resources via a centralized online access point. For more information about the LHDRP, see http://www.cdlib.org/inside/projects/oac/lsta/.
Project activities spanned August 2006 through June 2007. Activities included conservation, digitization, and cataloging of historical photographs and ephemera. Digital objects were created and cataloged using CONTENTdm, a digital asset management tool shared by LHDRP participants. The cataloging conforms to the CDL's Guidelines for Digital Objects specifications for descriptive and copyright metadata. For more information on these guidelines, see http://www.cdlib.org/inside/dglib/guidelines/.
Digitization was performed at Northern Micrographics using flatbed scanners. For each physical item, three digital image files were created: a TIFF master, a JPEG access image, and GIF thumbnail image. Digital image files conform to the CDL's Guidelines for Digital Images (see http://www.cdlib.org/inside/diglib/guidelines/bpgimages/).
