Scope and content:

The Land Case maps collection comprises maps found in private land claim cases in the U.S. Northern and Southern District Courts. The maps were created to establish ownership of the land represented. The maps show property boundaries, any buildings,and natural features. The maps cover a period from approximately 1850 to approximately 1890.

Biographical / historical:

The maps, or diseรฑos, that comprise the Land Case Maps collection originally formed part of the private land claims ajudicated by the U.S. District Courts of California (Northern and Southern Districts) and the U.S Circuit Court (9th Circuit) from ca. 1850 to 1860. The records of the private land claim cases, along with the maps, were held by the U.S. District Court, San Francisco until 1951 when they were transferred to The Bancroft Library.
