The bulk of the collection was accumulated and maintained by the UCSB University Libraries Reference Department as a vertical file for researchers, then later transferred to the Department of Special Collections. Related materials have been incorporated into the collection and continue to be added. The collection is arranged alphabetically by topic and consists primarily of newsclippings, along with other printed materials such as reports, newsletters, pamphlets, and flyers.
A substantial proportion of the collection relates to events in Isla Vista (the student community adjacent to UCSB) in the 1970s.
