Biographical / historical:

Charles Philip Sonnichsen (b. March 29, 1935 in El Paso, Texas) is an ethnomusicologist, educator, and folklorist specializing in Mexican American music, including mariachi, corridos, and the music of the farmworkers' and Chicano movements. The son of Southwest historian Charles Leland Sonnichsen, he earned his master's degree in ethnomusicology from UCLA (1972). His thesis topic was the music of Chicano singer/songwriter Ramón Rivera "Tiguere" Rodriguez, who wrote corridos and canciones based on his experiences during incarceration.

In 1976, Sonnichsen advised and wrote liner notes for the United Farm Workers benefit album ¡Sí Se Puede!. He later contributed liner notes to several projects on Arhoolie Records, including Corridos y Tragedias de la Frontera (1994).

In 1981, Sonnichsen founded Ambiente Music Productions, which issued an album of humorous songs by Lalo Guerrero as well as two LPs featuring songs of musicians associated with the farmworkers' movement.
