Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of 789 booklets for Indian cinema. The booklets are mostly from Bengali cinema but there are also Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Bhojpuri, Telugu, Tamil, Punjabi, English, and Nepali booklets. The booklets contain cover illustrations, photographs, cast and credits, song lyrics, plot narration and advertisements. The booklets are arranged chronologically and alphabetically by title. The director of each film is listed. The booklets are from 1937 to 2017 with the majority from 1940s to 1960s. The booklets were stored in envelopes which is where the inscriptions come from. Later addendums to this collection include 140 movie posters, 33 lobby cards, show cards, print-outs, photographs, scripts, pamphlets and other movie ephemera; the posters are in French, German, Japanese, Russian, Hindi, Telugu, Bengali, Malayalam, Spanish, Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, Italian, Czech, Arabic, Turkish, Japanese, and English.

Accession 2024-127 includes 11 posters. 3 are Indian film posters (2 Egyptian editions, 1 Russian edition); the other 8 Egyptian posters.

The collection is open for research except restricted materials which are closed until the date noted at the file level. Note that material is stored off-site and must be requested at least 36 hours in advance of intended use. Audiovisual materials are not available in original format, and must be reformatted to a digital use copy.
