Background
- Scope and content:
-
Artificial collection of material related to theater, motion pictures, and other performing arts, mainly consisting of photographs, magazines, and scrapbooks, largely from the later 19th to mid-20th century.
The first three series contain the bulk of the collection. Series 1 consists of a distinct collection of actor portraits mostly from the 1880s through the 1910s, many of which are signed. A number of photos have written references to pages in the scrapbooks in Series 2, which were once owned by Samuel Stark.
Series 3 contains a large number of movie fan magazines mostly from the 1930s and 40s in variable condition. These also appear to be from multiple sources but were probably given to Stanford as a group (again, possibly by Stark).
This collection contains most of the undescribed remainder of Stanford's theater-related archives, once a major collecting area. Many are listed in our catalog via this link: https://stanford.io/2QRVCTJ
