Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of correspondence, administrative paperwork, conference programs and other related event material, meeting minutes, reports, brochures and pamphlets, photographs, membership directories, and publicity materials relating to the history and activities of the California Garden & Landscape History Society (CGLHS) from its inception in 1995 through 2021. The collection's 42 color and 38 black-and-white photographic prints, 20 slides, and 24 negatives include portraits of society leadership and members; group photos; and images documenting society meetings, conferences, and other activities.

Materials in the collection can be categorized broadly into three main areas. The first, administrative and governance records, includes budget documents, bylaws, correspondence, board meeting minutes and agendas, reports, board rosters, membership directories, and photographs of CGLHS's 2004 Board Meeting (Box 1, Folders 1-5; Box 2, Folders 1-10, 14-15, 21, and 23). Box 1, Folder 4 contains documentation of the collection itself and its provenance. Also included in administrative records is an index to the Society's publication, Eden, from May 1996-Winter 2015 (Box 1, Folder 34) and a legacy finding aid for the collection provided by the donor (Box 2, Folder 22). The second area relates to marketing and publicity materials and includes brochures and pamphlets; records and correspondence relating to the CGLHS website; and documentation concerning the Society's Communications Committee (Box 2, Folders 11-13 and 16-20). The third area comprises a significant amount of the collection and includes annual meeting materials, conference programs, and photographs dating from 1995 to 2019 as well as documents and photographs relating to other member events such as tours (Box 1, folders 6-33; Box 2, Folders 24-26).

While most slides are in a separate folder (folder 26), there is a slide in folder 25 as well. Many photographs have identifying information, including names of individuals, on the back.

Inside each box is an inventory of its contents provided by the donor.

Biographical / historical:

Founded in 1995, the California Garden & Landscape History Society (CGLHS) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership organization with a volunteer board. Its mission is to promote wider knowledge, preservation, and restoration of California's historic gardens and landscapes. The organization has a membership of around 300 people, including landscape architects, scholars, garden directors, designers, historians, preservationists, writers, librarians, educators, government professionals, gardeners, and plant enthusiasts. CGLHS hosts an annual meeting and conference that range widely in subject matter and geographical focus across the state, and organizes talks, tours, and webinars. Since May 1996, the organization has also published a quarterly journal, Eden, which includes original research articles about California's garden and landscape history, book reviews of publications related to the CGLHS mission, and news about garden and landscape preservation efforts throughout Califoria. CGLHS has collaborated with government agencies and organizations such as the Cultural Landscape Foundation, California Preservation Foundation, National Park Service, California State Parks, Los Angeles County Arboretum, and the Library of American Landscape History. The organization was involved in coalitions that halted the destruction of the Hannah Carter Japanese Garden in Los Angeles, preserved the home and garden of landscape architect Lockwood de Forest in Santa Barbara, and protected the integry of Sacramento's Capital Park. In 2023, the California State Parks' Office of Historic Preservation (OHP) awarded CGLHS with the Governor's Historic Preservation Award for its work in raising awareness and support for the state's garden and landscape heritage.
