Biographical / historical:

Herman Gallegos has been an activist and community organizer with a focus on Latino rights and support, as well as a management consultant, director, and trustee on many corporate boards and nonprofits.

Born in Colorado, he was educated in California. There, Gallegos became the first president of Community Service Organization's (CSO) San Jose chapter, and then the national president in 1960.

After getting his MSW from the University of California, he began to shift his focus from organizing to other advocacy work. He was the district director with the San Bernardino County Council of Community Services, followed shortly after by a position on the board of the Rosenberg Foundation, the first of many of its kind for him.

Along with Ernesto Galarza and Julian Samora, Gallegos developed a recommendation to the Ford Foundation for addressing the needs of Hispanic communities, which resulted in the creation of the Southwest Council of La Raza (currently UnidosUS), a Latino nonprofit advocacy organization where Gallegos was the first Executive Director.

He has served on the boards of such corporate and philanthropic organizations as the Rockefeller Foundation, the San Francisco Foundation, Hallmark Cards, US Human Resources Corporation, Pacific Bell and Pacific Telesis Group, Transmetrics, Inc., and numerous others. He also cofounded Hispanics in Philanthropy.

Herman Gallegos has received multiple Presidential appointments, and was a Delegate to the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health, and a US Deputy Representative to the 49th United Nations General Assembly.

His publications includeMexican American sin the Southwest, with Ernesto Galarza and Julian Samora, Hispanics and the Non Profit Sector with Michael O'Neill, and US Foundations and Minority Group Interests.
