Abstract:: The Tan Jialo 譚加洛 collection (1927-2023) contains official documents, hand drawn manuscript maps, textiles, and other artifacts pertaining to Chinese sent-down youth 知青 refugees during the Cultural Revolution.

Scope and content:: Collection consists of documents and artifacts belonging to sent-down youths 知青 who escaped from different rural education camps and fled to Hong Kong before later immigrating to the United States. It features hand-drawn maps, handmade compasses, and the clothing utilized on their covert escape routes from southern China to Hong Kong and Macao. Also contains biographical information on three refugees based on their interviews with Tan as part of his research into the Cultural Revolution.
Biographical / historical:: Tan Jialo 譚加洛 (谭加洛) (1950-) is a historian and researcher on the subject of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Born in Guangdong Province in 1950, he immigrated to the United States in 1986. From 1996-2023, he conducted extensive interviews with people who had experienced the Cultural Revolution. Starting in 2012, Tan also began documenting the history of the sent-down youth 知青 movement.
