Scope and content:

Seventeen volumes of descriptive registers for prisoners entering San Quentin prison between 1851 and 1940. Registers include name of prisoner, commitment number, and date of arrival; information on nationality, crime, length of sentence, occupation, physical description, etc.; and information on discharge, parole, transfer, pardon, etc.

Acquisition information:
Volumes transferred to The Bancroft Library from the California State Archives in August 1978.
Processing information:

Collection originally processed and cataloged in 1993. In 2022, Lara Michels, Head of Archival Processing, rehoused at-risk volumes and created an online finding aid for the collection.

COLLECTION STORED, IN PART, OFF-SITE. Advance notice required for use.
Physical description:
Volumes 1 and 11 have been disbound, foldered, and placed into oversize boxes.
