Sara Wood Smith is the great-granddaughter of Charles Erskine Scott Wood.
Charles Erskine Scott Wood was born in Erie, Pennsylvania on February 20, 1852, to Rosemary Carson and William Maxwell Wood. He graduated from West Point in 1874 and served as aide-de-camp to General O.O Howard during the 1877 campaigns against the Nimiipuu (Nez Perce) and the Bannock-Paiute tribes. He later received a law degree from Columbia University before settling in Oregon and specializing in maritime and corporation law. In 1878, Wood married Nanny Moale Smith and they had three sons and two daughters. He met Sara Bard Field, an advocate for women's suffrage, in 1910. Field had married Albert Ehrgott in 1900 and had a son and daughter before divorcing in 1914. Wood and Field established a home together in 1917 and married in 1938. Wood died on January 22, 1944.
