Background

Scope and content:

The Stuart P. Walsh collection (HDC 1320, SAFR 21383) consists of logbooks; letters and newspaper clippings, a Coast Guard operator's license and photographs.

Stuart P. Walsh collected logbooks for the WHITE LIGHT (built 1934; yacht); letters and newspaper clippings about the sinking of the PRINCESS SOPHIA (built 1912; passenger vessel) and the subsequent litigation. Walsh also had a license to operate motor boats carrying passengers for hire issued by the US Coast Guard; and photographs of various places and vessels in the Pacific Northwest. The collection has been processed to the file unit level and is open for use without restrictions.

Biographical / historical:

Stuart P. Walsh, who collected these documents, was head of the Seattle Boy Scouts and instrumental in starting the first Sea Scout Chapter in the city of San Francisco.

Walsh wrote five manuals for Boy Scout leaders including the pamphlet, Sea Scouts Afloat: Hints on Cruising in 1932 with his co-author Harry B. Jones. The yacht WHITE LIGHT sailed out of Seattle.

The passenger vessel the PRINCESS SOPHIA was built in 1912 by Bow, McLachlan and Company of Paisley, Scotland. The ship was built for the Canadian Pacific Line's Alaska run, and made its maiden voyage in June of 1912. On October 25, 1918, the steam ship struck Vanderbilt Reef, in Alaskan territory, and all 268 passengers on board were killed. According to "The Wreck of the Princess Sophia" (http://www.ssislander.co.uk/sophia.html), the ship's sinking was "Southeast Alaska's worst maritime disaster."
