Background

Biographical / historical:

Anthony L. Coelho was born on June 15, 1942. The third of four children, he worked on his family’s dairy farm in Los Banos throughout his childhood. Coelho graduated from Dos Palos High School in 1960, and obtained a B.A. in Political Science at Loyola University in 1964, graduating with honors.

Coelho became the youngest Chief of Staff for U.S. Congressman Bernie Sisk in the 1970s. While Coelho was Sisk’s Chief of Staff, he served on a number of different committees and subcommittees, including the House Rules Subcommittee on Broadcasting where he developed the procedures to televise House proceedings on C-SPAN.

In November 1978, Coelho was elected to the 96th Congress, and was later elected to the five succeeding Congresses until his resignation on June 15, 1989. While he was a member of Congress, he also served on the Agriculture, Interior, Veteran Affairs, and Administration committees. In 1980, he was named chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) and in 1986, was named House Majority Whip.

In 1989, Coelho joined Wertheim Schroder and Company, an investment firm located in New York as a managing director. Shortly after joining the company, Coelho served as president and CEO until 1995. In 1995, Coelho formed Education, Training, and Communication w/tci (ETC w/tci), a company that specializes in training teachers in new technology designed to assist classroom instruction, located in Washington, D.C. He served as chairman and CEO until 1997.

From 1994 to 2001, President Bill Clinton appointed Coelho to serve as the Chairman of the President’s Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities (PCEPD), a committee designed to curtail discriminatory practices of employers. During this time, he also served as the Vice Chair of the National Task Force on Employment of Adults with Disabilities. Coelho also maintained an active presence in the Epilepsy Foundation of America, serving on the board of directors. In addition to his work with the Epilepsy Foundation, he also served as chairman of the Board of Directors for the American Association of People with Disabilities.

In November 1994, Speaker of the House Tom Foley appointed Coelho as a member of the Commission on the Roles and Capabilities of the United States Intelligence Community. In 1998, Clinton appointed Coelho as United States Commissioner General for the 1998 World Exposition, held in Lisbon, Portugal. One year later, he was appointed as the co-chair of the U.S. Census Monitoring Board for the 2000 federal census. In 1999, he became chairman of Vice President Al Gore’s presidential campaign until his resignation in June 2000.

Custodial history:

The Tony Coelho Papers were donated by Tony Coelho to the California State Univeristy, Fresno's Henry Madden Library in 2008. Fresno State transferred the collection to Loyola Marymount University's William H. Hannon Library in 2017. This collection also includes additional donations made by Tony Coelho. Additional accruals are made by Tony Coelho.

Processing information:

The collection was initially processed by Tiffany Polfer at California State University, Fresno's Henry Madden Library in 2010 as part of the Central Valley Political Archive. Additional processing was completed upon transfer to Loyola Marymount University by Marisa Ramirez.
