Background

Scope and content:

The majority of this collection is comprised of various manuscripts to the guides that were produced by Bedpan Productions. They include four guides to San Francisco which began in 1991 and ended in 1995. Also, included are guides to both Washington D.C. and New York. For each final draft guide there are preliminary notes and drafts which have been altered. These contain marks and suggestions from the authors and various editors. Most of the comments of the editors pertain to grammar and technical usage of language; however, they amplify the unique manner in which the authors choose to describe the various environments. In addition, the collection also contains final drafts of each of the guides to the various cities. A picture of the authors and promotional papers are also included.

Biographical / historical:

In the words of the authors, Betty and Pansy's Severe Queer Reviews are, "An irreverent, opinionated guide to the bars, clubs, restaurants, cruising areas, performing arts, and other attraction of the queer Mecca". Bedpan Productions and the Severe Queer Reviews of San Francisco, New York, and Washington D.C. (1991-1995) were the results of the collaborative efforts of authors Pansy and Betty. The authors decided originally to produce an atypical queer guidebook to San Francisco. They had noticed that most of the gay guides to SF described the bars, clubs, and other points of social interest in broad and politically correct terms. In reaction to the types and prices of guides that were available within the gay and lesbian community they produced the first Severe Queer Review. Topics reviewed range from mainstream bars and clubs to the underground scene. Also included are places of cruising, lodging, restaurants, religious groups, culture, and transportation. The initial guides were of San Francisco and progressed to include both Washington D.C. and New York.
