Series 1. Mary Sheldon Barnes Photographs of North American Indians, 1892-1904
- Scope and content:
-
Mary Sheldon Barnes was Professor of History at Stanford University from 1892-1897. These photographs were collected by Barnes and other Stanford faculty and students for her Pacific Slope history classes. Two photographs were almost certainly taken by Barnes or her students - one of the Castro shellmound in Mayfield and a portrait of Pedro Evencio. The majority of prints are commercially available images in the form of cabinet cards (& two stereoviews), although some photographs are unpublished and likely unique. All but two are mounted, and most have stamps indicating "Mary Sheldon Barnes - Stanford University." One image has a note written after 1906, and so must have been added prior to Barnes' classes.
