Background

Scope and content:

The records comprise Phelan Poetry Contest and student poetry contest entries and related administrative records from the 1980s, as well as minutes and correspondence spanning years 1930-1988. In addition, a number of folders contain documentation on the Ellis Obeson poetry collection, Robert Frost Chapter of the Chapparal Poets, Fine Arts League of Cupertino, and the Ina Coolbrith Circle.

Biographical / historical:

The Edwin Markham Poetry Society was founded circa 1930 to encourage interest in poetry and kindred literature and arts, to sponsor an annual poetry contest, and to preserve the contents of the Hoe Room at the Edwin Markham House (formerly located at 832 South Eight Street in San Jose, now located at History Park). The organization's goals were to study poetic literature and allied subjects, to further the work of members and to provide a visitor reception center in the Edwin Markham house. It was disbanded circa 1990.

Acquisition information:
The records were donated to the San Jose Historical Museum in 1992 by Evelyn Reed Sloan and her daughter Ednamae Lee. Sloan was a long-term member of the Society.
