Biographical / historical:

Leon Kirkman Amyx (1908-1995), born in Visalia (1908), died in Auburn (1995). Known for his Regionalist style of watercolor paintings. B.A. from San Jose State University (1931) and M.A. from Claremont College (1942). His mentors/influencers include: Millard Sheets, Henry Lee McFee, James Chapin, Erle Loran, Ethen Abeel, Hamilton Wolfe, Clarence Hinkle and Glenn Wessells. His students include: Wayne Thiebaud, Ralph Goings, and Eldon Dedini. Was first art instructor at Hartnell College in Salinas (1936) and eventually became department head; taught summers at Sacramento State College, San Jose State College, and the University of the Pacific (1949-1959); participated in the Gold Gate Exposition at Treasure Island (1939); had many one-man shows; won numerous medals and prizes; retired from Hartnell College (1972); traveled and continued painting until his death (1995). Memberships include: San Francisco Art Institute; National Watercolor Society; Carmel Art Association (he served on the Board of Directors for 2 terms).
