    Biographical / Historical

The Spanish-American War lasted from April to August of 1898. It took place following an explosion on the USS Maine in Havana Harbor in Cuba, which led to United States intervention in the Cuban War of Independence from Spain. The war was fought in both the Caribbean and the Pacific with US naval forces. Spain was also taking Cuban insurgent attacks and losing many soldiers to yellow fever.
The war ended with the 1898 Treaty of Paris, giving ownership of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippine islands to the United States from Spain. It also granted the United States temporary control of Cuba.

    Scope and Contents

This collection consists of journal entries, letters, and publications related to the Spanish-American War. There is also one lithograph. The journal entries were written by Samuel H. Edwards, a sergeant of Troop C First Calvary during the war. He wrote down accounts of the war, the names of his troop members and leadership, as well as the casualties they incurred. Willis O. Johnson wrote letters during the war from Camp Alger, VA. Included are also publications about the Spanish-American war from the 1980s and 1990s.
