Scope and content:

Part 1: Collection of notebooks documenting artist's many works. Artist's CODEX is the key listing his painting catalogue and volumes (note: only those volumes related to art were given to MMoA). Volumes are arranged by topic not chronological. Collection includes: mixed media, photographs, negatives, news clippings, photocopies, sketchbooks, slides, records, and orginal art in various media. Biographical / historical:

Born in Butte, MT (1927); died in Pebble Beach, CA (2000). Early training under Dr. H. Castagna of the University of Beunos Aires, Argentina. B.S. University of Cincinnati (1949); M.F.A. University of California, Berkeley (1954). Instructor at Connecticut College and Designer for Martha Graham Dance Theatre, New London, CT (1947). U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Korea and Japan (1949-1952). Member of the American Federation of the Arts, Monterey Peninsula Chapter, and the Carmel (CA) Art Association. Primarily a painter, McGilvra also did an impressive amount of architectural, industrial, landscape, and interior design work, plus more than 20 murals in US and abroad. Multiple one-man shows; commercial advertisements for California stores; and illustrated covers for Monterey's Game & Gossip magazine. More than 200 of McGilvra's paintings are in collections in the United States, South America, and the Orient, as well as the Monterey Museum of Art.
