Background
- Scope and content:
-
This is a hand-written copy made by Frederick Webb Hodge of the Papal Bull issued by Pope Alexander VI in 1493 regarding the "Line of Demarcation." Document is in Spanish.
This bull addressed the definition of a meridian west which all lands "found and find" belong to the kings of Castile and Leon. This was a change favorable to the Catholic Monarchs over the brief Inter cetera, which had stipulated that belonging to the Castilian crown were only lands discovered by sailors Castilians. Other minor additions were a clearer reference to mainland (terras signatures) and words of praise to Columbus.
The Bull Inter Caetera defines the territories given to Castile and Leon in the following way "... All islands and mainlands discovered and undiscovered, found and find, to the west and south, making and forming a line from the Arctic pole, namely the north, to the Antarctic pole, namely the south, they are both on the mainland and on islands discovered and undiscovered to India or to another anywhere, which line gave any of the islands that are called vulgarly the Azores and Cape Verde hundred leagues towards the west and the south, which by another king or Christian prince were not already owned prior to Christmas day of our Lord Jesus Christ last, in which begins this year, 1493 ...
