Background

Scope and content:

Resolution honoring Mrs. Justin P. Moore as Librarian Emeritus, Feb. 3, 1932; portrait of Mrs. Moore; and a letter from Mrs. J.P. Moore to Mr. H.B. Marino, FUAP secretary, 1936.

Biographical / historical:

Fire Underwriters' Association of the Pacific (FUAP) was created as a membership organization of insurance adjusters on Feb. 23, 1876 in San Francisco, to share information and promote the interests of its members. The group's creation was brought on by a great fire in Virginia City, NV in October 1875. The fire led to 34 adjusters meeting on Oct. 28, 1875 for mutual protection and to handle the adjustment of losses. Soon, a permanent organization took shape. The company flourished into the 1990s when the insurance industry underwent significant changes. FUAP is now known as the Insurance Education Association.

Charlotte D. Moore went by the name, Mrs. Justin P. Moore. She created the organization's library and served as its librarian. Moore was referred to as "Mother" by the organization, and she referred to the group as "Family" in the letter.
