Her genealogical research papers include correspondence with family, notes, news clippings, photographs and other records from her mother and father's families (Taft and Aurner). Correspondence, notes, articles and news clippings document her research into the history of Amador County and more specifically the small town of Volcano (1850s to 1870s). Highlights include Dennis Townsend's patent folding globe (ca. 1870) with associated biographical information. Also included are a ceramic panther and glassware purportedly from Joyland Amusement Park in Oak Park.

Biographical / historical:

Mabel Taft Davis was born Mabel Gertrude Taft on August 18, 1901, in Kansas to Grace Harriet and Carl M. Taft, and spent most of her life in the Oak Park neighborhood in Sacramento. After graduating from San Jose High School in 1918, she earned her teaching credential for the kindergarten level from San Jose State Normal School in 1921. Mabel married Ernest Byron Davis in the early 1920s, and they had two children: Ruth E. Davis (b. 1924) and Byron Ernest Davis (b. 1925). After relocating to Sacramento, she served as a clerk for the State of California for many years. Mabel remarried years after Ernest's death in 1950, to Rufus May Smith (in 1965). She retired by 1970 and later pursued interests in genealogy and California history. Mabel Taft Davis passed away on May 11, 1994.
