Background

Scope and content:

Rick Gerharter is best known for his contributions to the Bay Area Reporter, one of San Francisco's oldest LGBTQ weeklies. He has also published in Newsweek, Der Spiegel, Lonely Planet travel guides, and The Economist as well as many books. This collection contains photographs by Rick Gerharter. Included are photos of Stop AIDS Now or Else, a group that drew from ACT-UP and Queer Nation, blocking the Golden Gate Bridge in 1989, photos from the GLBTHS’s ‘Sporting Life’ exhibit and 26 photographs from GLBTHS’s exhibit 'Capturing the Moment: The Photojournalism of Rick Gerharter.' There are also color contact sheets. The 'Capturing the Moment’ exhibit was held at the GLBTHS on June 14, 2006. This exhibit highlights LGBT life in the San Francisco Bay Area since the late 1980’s and the images emphasize the uniqueness of individuals, events, and spaces through use of vivid color and attention to personality and the power of place.
