Charlotte Anne Boon Ferretti was born May 16, 1932 in Fresno, California at the old St. Agnes Hospital the daughter of Charles B. Boon and Zelma Maxine Simpson Boon R.N. She passed from this life on Monday, April 30, 2018 at Madera Community Hospital.
Charlotte received her early education in Fresno, attending Kindergarten and first grade in the Bungalow at St. John’s Cathedral and later attended Fresno Schools until the fifth grade. Her sixth grade was at St. Joseph’s Convent in Berkeley, California, her seventh grade was at St. Brendan’s School in Los Angeles, California and her 8th Grade was at Lincoln School in Madera, California. She graduated with the Class of 1950 at Madera Union High School and went on to complete one year at Fresno State College (now CSU Fresno).
Later Charlotte was employed at Pacific Telephone Co., Gottschalks Department Store, and Fresno Dry Goods.
An avid reader all her life, Charlotte had a large library of many books, mostly history, poetry, biography and references on many and varied subjects. Her love of history came from her father. She was a dedicated genealogist and was always ready to help anyone who was serious about researching their “Family tree”.
Her love of history and genealogy made it possible for her to establish memberships in several hereditary societies and well as others, including an Auxiliary member of the Legion of Mary, a Life Member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants, a member of Colonial Dames of XVII Century, member of Society of Daughters of American Colonists, a Charter Member of Yosemite CL., and 52 year member of National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution. Member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, a recipient of Jefferson Davis Gold Medal for preservation of History, a Native Daughter of the Golden West, a Charter and a life Member of the Scottish Society of Central, California, a Life Member of the Friends of the Madera County Library. In later years she was a member of St. Columba’s Church Altar Society in Chowchilla.
In her high school years she was active in high school sports. She also showed American Saddlebred gaited horses and in later years enjoyed Arabian horses.
Charlotte also worked at St. Vincent de Paul Thrift store in Madera, starting in the 1960’s; she left the store in 2003, due to a back injury.
Charlotte is preceded in death by her father, Lt. Col. Charles B. Boon in 1984, her daughter Maria Deane Ferretti in 1990, her step-father James H. Austin in 1998, and her mother Zelma Maxine Simpson Boon Austin in 2006.

- Processing information:
-
Due to space and conservation concerns, the materials were taken out of their original binders. Materials were previously stored in black three-ring binders at least three inches wide. The folders have been kept in the order they were found within the binder but separated into series; however, the order of the binders themselves could not be ascertained. The collection came organized by surname and each binder contained materials related to that surname; however, sometimes it was arranged by person. Oftentimes, there were materials that did not seem to have any relation to the other surnames, yet they were included in the binder. The folder tabs with the surnames also often did not have any relation to the surname in the folder. A such, these were moved to the last series and original order was not maintained in that respect.
Newspaper clippings were separated from the other documents with acid free paper. Photographs were placed in photo sleeves. Scrapbook pages were left in their original plastic sleeves. Original documents, such as vital records and older documents like the 1832 manuscript, were placed in mylar. If materials were grouped together in sleeves, they were kept together by creating an acid-free sling. Oversized items including Vernie Gillmore Reagles' World War I military passport [Series 6, Sub-series 3] and J.J Boon's property records [Series 9, Sub-series 2] were separated and placed in Box 7.
A guide on the scrapbook-like pages: Materials were adhered to or placed on a black construction paper backing in a plastic sleeve, making it a scrapbook-like page. In the guide, each scrapbook page is depicted as an "Item" and the description for each "Item" encompasses materials included on both sides of each page.
For some individuals in the collection, their items were partially redacted by the processing archivist.
The collection was processed by Dvorah Lewis, student assistant Thai-Van Stanoff, and Sutro Library staff in 2024.
- Arrangement:
-
Charlotte originally arranged the collection by surname and stored the materials in binders. Many of the pages within the binders are similar to scrapbook pages as they include Charlotte's commentary handwritten and typewritten on the pages. Series were created by processing staff to reflect the surnames found within these binders.
