Scope and content:

The Andrew J. Eddy collection consists of articles, clippings, photographs, correspondence, press releases, printed emails, and event announcements, with the bulk spanning 1994-2000. Much of the materials relate to Eddy’s work with various community organizations such as Sunshine Athletic Association, which includes newsletters from SAA Scubanews and Oh, Buoy Sailing and Cruising Club; Broward Log Cabin Club of Florida correspondence and press releases; Log Cabin Republicans correspondence; and articles written by Eddy for his column, “Frankly Speaking,” as part of Hotspots Magazine. The collection also contains ephemera, such as the dinner program, clippings, and invitation for the Sixth Annual Ray Lisanti Human Rights Award Dinner, where Eddy received the GUARDian of the Century Award in 1999.

Biographical / historical:

Born on August 21, 1936, Andrew J. Eddy, a New York native, later moved to Broward County, Florida. Holding a Bachelors of Science degree in Economics, he was employed by Broward Housing to secure government and private grant funding, and became a founding member of many gay and lesbian organizations in the South East, Florida. Eddy was politically active as a Republican.

He was on the Political Advocacy Coalition Political Action Committee (PAC-PAC) Board of Trustees and a founding member of Broward Log Cabin Club of Florida, a gay Republican organization. Eddy was the South East Regional Director for the Log Cabin Federation, which was renamed the Log Cabin Republicans Club under his leadership, and also served as its Director for Media Outreach and Community Relations.

Eddy was also an active member of the Sunshine Athletic Association (SAA); a founder of the Sunshine Athletic Association Scuba Club and served as SAA Scuba President; Tri-County SAA Executive Council; SAA Broward Chapter Vice President; and SAA AIDS Coordinator. In 1988 he received the Tri-County SAA Chairman’s Award.

As a community volunteer Eddy assisted in the opening of the Poverello Thrift Shop in Pompano Beach; served as Grant Administrator for the Poverello food bank; and founded the Florida Gold Coast Chapter of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual Veterans of America (GLBVA). He wrote a weekly column, “Frankly Speaking,” for Hotspots Magazine. In 1999 he received GUARDian of the Century from the Gays United to Attack Repression and Discrimination (GUARD), a lifetime achievement award.

Collection donated by Andy Eddy to the ONE Institute/International Gay and Lesbian Archives (now the ONE Archives at the USC Libraries), circa 2002. The donation was facilitated by John O'Brien.
