The collection contains historic building reports written by or with research by Kostura. Some reports are for specific buildings; others are for neighborhoods such as Bernal Heights, North Beach, and Hayes Valley. Of interest are the reports on Crissy Field structures prior to the restoration of that location. Yerba Buena East, Caltrain stations, and PG&E substations are also represented.

William Kostura is an architectural historian who lives in the San Francisco bay area. His research on historic structures in San Francisco and the bay area is well regarded. In addition to many HABS reports, Kostura's books include: "Russian Hill: The Summit" (San Francisco: Aerie, 1997), and "William F. Lewis: San Francisco House Builder" (San Francisco: Book Club of California, 1993) co-written with Susan Johnson.
