Background

Scope and content:

The Harvey J. Stefanowicz Collection contains ephemera, maps, and newspapers that illustrate daily life and special events for China Marines in Peitaihoe Beach and Tientsin. The Christmas menu includes illustrations of stereotyped views of local Chinese, while the second menu shows the currency exchange rate between local currency and U.S. dollars. The hand drawn maps list Stefanowicz's service dates in Peitaiho Beach, and depict the billet lay out for the 7th Marines in the area. The collection is arranged chronologically.

Biographical / historical:

Harvey J. Stefanowicz served in the U.S. Marine Corps in China from December 1945 to April 1947. He was stationed in Tientsin [Tianjan], Tangshan, Peitaihoe Beach [Beidaihe District], Peking [Beijing], and Chinwangtao [Qinhuangdao]. Prior to his service in North China he was stationed in Guam from April to December 1945.
