Scope and content:

The collection contains five diaries kept by Ira Hinckley during his travels in New Zealand from 1882 to 1884 and in Utah from 1885 to 1887. There are also letters written to Hinckley by fellow missionaries Walter Barber, William Bromley, Bennett Clark, Alma Greenwood, Joseph Morris, Ephraim Ralphs and W.T. Stewart. The collection also contains letters from family members, such as Adelaide Hinckley, his mother Angeline Wilcox Hinckley, his father Ira Nathaniel Hinckley, LaVern Hinckley, Emily Noble and Lucien Noble. Of note in the collection is one letter from a Maori family named Ihaia and another letter from two Maori individuals named Robert Manihera and Horiana Whakamairu. There is also one manuscript about Ira Nathaniel Hinckley. The ephemera includes a newspaper clipping and copies of photographs of the Hinckley family.

Biographical / historical:

Ira Noble Hinckley, son of Mormon pioneer emigrant Ira Nathaniel Hinckley, was called by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to a mission in New Zealand in 1882. He spent the next two years there in company with various other LDS missionaries, endeavoring to spread word of their faith among the European and Maori communities. He returned to Utah in 1884.
