Background
- Scope and content:
-
A collection of 75 items from 1817? to 1837, it consists of letters written by John Poole; 74 of which were written to James St. Aubyn and one letter was written to Abraham Hayward. The letters discuss the latest theater news and gossip, and Poole offers his opinion about various plays and actors. The letters shed light on the theater of the period, and most of the great actors of the day are mentioned and frequently their performances in specific plays are evaluated by Poole. Poole also wrote to St. Aubyn of some of the legal problems he encountered in producing his own plays. James St. Aubyn (1783-1862), was the eldest of 15 illegitimate children of Sir John St. Aubyn, 5th Baronet; James St. Aubyn was also an avid theater-goer and member of British gentry society. Abraham Hayward (1801-1884) was a British man of letters and leader of British society.
