Scope and content:

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography Technical Publications Office records document the functions of the office and publication policies of the institution. Materials were primarily collected and produced by Kitty K. Kuhns.

When the functions of the Technical Publications Office were absorbed into the SIO Communications Office, these records were closed and no additional material is expected. This collection is arranged in two series: 1) ADMINISTRATIVE FILES and 2) PUBLICATIONS AND REPORTS.

Biographical / historical:

The Technical Publications Office at Scripps Institution of Oceanography was responsible for various publications created by the institution. The office was led by Kitty K. Kuhns and functioned as part of the SIO Director's Office. Kuhns was hired in 1968, initially as an editor responsible for contract reports and the Contributions (Scripps Institution of Oceanography). Prior to this, all publications were managed by the Public Affairs Office.

Kuhns' role expanded and she later assumed responsibility for editing content, printing, and distribution of additional publications including annual reports, scientific papers, and the SIO Log. In 1971, Kitty Kuhns took responsibility for editing the Marine Technicians Handbook, which was formerly issued by Sea Grant. Kitty worked closely with the Committee on Educational Policy to prepare the Scripps section of the General Catalog and with the SIO Staff Council Editorial and Publications Committee on the Contributions (Scripps Institution of Oceanography). During its years of operation, the office worked with the SIO Photographic Laboratory, who produced images on behalf of the Institution. Eventually, the functions of the Technical Publications Office were absorbed into the SIO Communications Office.
