Background
- Scope and content:
-
The A.F. Schleicher collection is a series of six large photograph scrapbooks and documents the life and travels of Schleicher in the early 20th century.
"Gus" Schleicher was a prominent figure in the social fraternal Ancient Arabic Order, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, commonly known as The Shriners. Schleicher was also involved in the Masonic fraternal organization for young men, the DeMolay, and hosted numerous parties at his home in the hills of Mill Valley in Marin County, California, which he referred to as "Olympus." He was an avid world traveler, and died in 1931 in a boating accident in Germany.
This collection has been organized chronologically and by subject matter of the scrapbooks, and includes over 2,000 hand-colored and black-and-white photographs of Schleicher's travels and experiences. Inside of the scrapbooks, there are numerous annotations denoting the names and dates of people and places in the photographs. The albums also document the development and additions to his home in Mill Valley.
There are also numerous photographs of Yosemite Park in California.
