The materials in this collection reflect Charles King's research on the history of Moldova in the twentieth century. It consists of his research notebooks, dating to his work in Moldovan archives and libraries in 1993 and 1994, and other research materials (notes, newspaper clippings, copies of newspaper articles, typed copies of archival documents, and reproductions of archival photographs). Much of this material was used in the preparation of King's book The Moldovans: Romania, Russia, and the Politics of Culture (Stanford, 2000).
The bulk of his research material is organized into two distinct groupings: chronological files (1988-1992) and subject files. The latter are devoted to topics such as Moldovan political parties; the military; law; foreign relations; economic issues; Moldovan language, literature and linguistics; the Gagauz ethnic minority; and the Transnistrian separatist crisis and frozen conflict. The collection also contains a large number of limited circulation reports, occasional papers, and working papers. In addition, there are some clippings and ephemera dating to the 1950s (in 2 folders) related to the Iron Guard and the Ustashi in Franco's Spain, which were sent to King by a colleague.
