Background

Scope and content:

Collection includes program materials and Stanford brochures and pamphlets for Chicano/Latinx students.

Biographical / historical:

The Chicano Fellows Program began during the 1971-1972 Stanford academic year. The program was open to all Stanford University graduate students. Because of a lack of Mexican American faculty, selected graduate students taught undergraduate courses. The Chicano Fellows were housed in the Nitery Building, now the home of Centro Chicano y Latino. The purpose of the program was to enhance the Stanford Latina/o/x student graduate experience, and fulfill the department's teaching, research and residency requirement needs.

In the inauguration year, Dr. Renato Rosaldo, assistant professor of Anthropology at Stanford, was selected as the primary advisor to all the fellows in the Chicano Fellows Program. On November 1978, El Centro Chicano y Latino officially opened on campus. During its first few years, the center shared its spaced with the Chicano Fellows Program, had no professional staff, and its daily operations were entirely managed by part time staff composed of Stanford students. The center also initially had no budget and no full-time director. It was first governed by Griselda Castro, Adviser with the Office of Student Activities and later, Mike Perez, Dean of Student Affairs
