Scope and content:

Collection contains photographs of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Library renovation including photos of the architects, demolition, building interior and exterior, and library staff. Also includes several images of the original building prior to the renovation.

Biographical / historical:

The original 32,000 sq. ft. Peninsula Center Library was designed by pioneering architects in "green design," A. Quincy Jones and Fredrick E. Emmons in 1967. In 1990, the Los Angeles based architectual firm Zimmer, Gunsul, Fransca (ZGF) was selected by the Board of Trustees to renovate the library. The renovation, which lasted from 1993 to 1995, expanded the space, nearly doubling its size. A significant renovation included opening the north and south facades for more natural light. It also included public artworks by Los Angeles based artists: Stellar Axis by Lita Albuquerque and her glass etchings for the community room; and two bronze cheetah sculptures and carved limestone column of endangered African animals by Gwynn Murrill. The library also retained pieces from the original 1967 design, including refinished Eames office chairs.

Gloria Grimes, Deputy Director for the Palos Verdes Library District during the renovation and expansion, worked with architects, interior designers, construction workers and Board Trustees, and documented the renovation with periodic snapshots.
