Background

Scope and content:

John Horn, Jr.'s papers consist of correspondence relating to information he had requested for Canada First about various persons and letters collected for their autograph value. Henry George Vennor's papers relate mostly to his private and professional affairs, including his career in the Geological Survey of Canada. The miscellaneous papers include single items and small groups of letters relating to various aspects of Canadian history, including Jesuit missions, the Hudson's Bay Company (journal, minutes from council meetings, etc.), the Seven Years' War, the American Revolutionary era, and the War of 1812.

Biographical / historical:

John Horn, Jr. was editor of the magazine Canada First and an autograph collector. Henry George Vennor (1840-1884) was a Canadian meteorologist and ornithologist, a member of the staff of the Geological Survey of Canada, and author of the Vennor Almanac.

Purchased from Anderson Galleries, Maggs Bros. Ltd., and others, 1912-1919.

Processed by various Huntington staff in the 1920s and 1930s, then assembled into one collection; in September 2024, Gayle M. Richardson created the finding aid.
