Background

Scope and content:

A portfolio of 16 loose color photographs of Doyle Lane's work, and two compact discs of digital photographs by Ben Serar of Lane working at his studio in 1976, and images of Lane's works. The 16 print photographs include: pottery on exhibit in a display case; Lane's "weed pots"; a glazed tile mural at Golden State Bank, Downey; two portraits of Lane with his works; installation shots of the Pasadena Mutual Savings and Loan tile mural, 1964, commissioned by architect Welton Becket (later reinstalled at The Huntington in 2015); and images of unidentified works.

Biographical / historical:

Doyle Lane (1925-2002) was an African American ceramic artist. He was born in New Orleans and moved to Los Angeles in the 1950s, where he attended Los Angeles City College and the University of Southern California. He lived most of his life at his home and studio in the El Sereno neighborhood of Los Angeles. Known for his mastery of glazes, Lane was often commissioned by architects to create large ceramic murals, which Lane called clay paintings.

Gift of Ben and Heide Serar, July 2024.
Custodial history:

When Doyle Lane died, one of his sisters retrieved what was left of his property, including his portfolio. When his sister died years later, her son then sold the portfolio to Ben Serar, a photographer and personal friend of Lane's.
