Biographical / historical:

Born in St. Louis, Missouri. January 1929-June 1933 studied art at St. Louis School of Fine Arts and Washington University. 1934 Joined the Carmel Art Association (Carmel, California). 1935-1939 created paintings in California for Federal Arts Project for public buildings and US Senate offices. 1940 Commissioned by John Steinbeck to "paint his portrait while Steinbeck was writing the Sea of Cortez." 1941 Commissioned by John Steinbeck to paint in Republic of Mexico. 1942 lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico studing Native American Indian art and dance. 1943-1944 US Navy service. Lived in and painted: 1945 New York; 1946-1951 New Mexico and Monterey, California; 1952-1953 throughout Carribbean; 1954-1955 Mexico; 1956-1964 Florida and Monterey, California; 1964-2000 Pebble Beach, CA; Died 2007 in Oregon. Known for his abstracts, pictographs and murals. Unpublished manuscript entitled "Winding Butter" is a 400+ page hand-written account of living and working in Mexico (1954-1955) with wife Barbara Stevensen. Many one-man and group shows. Numerous awards received 1939-1958. Graham's works are in permanent collections of numerous museums and many private collections. Family: In 1933 married artist Barbara Stevensen (aka Judith Diem), had 4 children, and they divorced 1952. Married second wife "Nell" at unknown date.
