Background

Scope and content:

The CELILO (built 1915; steam schooner) logbooks is comprised of three logbooks belonging to the mate, engineer, and pilot house. Each logbook records voyages during 1920, 1931-1932. The collection has been processed to the collection level and is open to use without restrictions.

The mate's logbook covers the period from July 21 to December 2, 1920, and is for voyages 133-139. It records time, name of headland or place, compass reading, distance, weather, winds, etc., and remarks (usually regarding conditions) during trips among the following ports: St. Helen, San Francisco, San Pedro, Redmonds, Bellingham, Tacoma, Seattle, Portland, San Diego. There are also loose pages on boat and fire drills and one page on station bill signals.

The engineer's logbook is for voyages 50-98, October 17, 1931 to June 9, 1932, between San Francisco and San Pedro. Among the general entries for the voyages is the mention of the CELILO in drydock on December 14, 1931.

The pilot house logbook records voyages 84-102 between San Francisco and San Pedro during the period March 3 to June 27, 1932. It records the same kinds of information as does the mate's logbook. The May 12, 1932 entry mentions meeting the WAPAMA.

Biographical / historical:

CELILO (built 1915; steam schooner) was operated by the McCormack Steamship Company. In the early 1920s, she and her sister ship, the WAPAMA were sold when the McCormack fleet all went steel. CELILO ended up as wreckage lying on a deserted island in Suisun Bay, and was burned by vandals on the eve of an expedition to salvage materials.
