Scope and content:

Collection contains correspondence, notes, reports, newsletters, originals and photocopies of newspaper articles, memorandums, press releases, transcripts of testimonies and other legal papers related to the work of the Ad Hoc Group on the University of California and the Weapons Laboratories. The group, started in 1986, comprised 12 UC faculty members who began informing UC faculty of the University's mismanagement in the oversight and regulation of Lawrence Livermore National and Los Alamos National Laboratory. The group employed a letter writing campaign directed at UC President David P. Gardner and the UC Regents. Collection includes drafts of letters addressed to Gardner and signed by UC faculty; faculty statements given to the UC Regents; planning notes for various colloquiums and conferences, including for Strategic Defense Initiatives roundtables and conferences; legal papers and testimonies pertaining to the laboratories; and materials related to the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty and the leaked files of whistleblower Roy Woodruff. Many of the papers include annotations by ad hoc group member Keith Miller.

Transfer from Department of Mathematics, University of California, Berkeley in 2024.
Processing information:

Collection processed by Bancroft staff at the container level in 2025. Materials were rehoused into archival cartons and folders. Donor-supplied description was used to create folder titles and to describe material at the folder level.
