Summary
Background
- Scope and content:
-
An artificial collection of newspapers published from throughout the United States in English, and also papers in other languages. The strength of the collection is for southern California and Los Angeles area papers. Also a very small number of foreign titles. Late 1700s – 1992, undated (bulk is 1850s – 1890s) Loose issues, incomplete runs, and bound volumes, including rare titles for Los Angeles city and county, including the Los Angeles Star. Also noteworthy in the collection are two issues (1888) of the first Black newspaper from southern California, the Weekly Observer. Some newspaper issues have been retained for events such as the American Civil War, the San Francisco Earthquake and Fire (1906), and the World Wars. An English language paper published in Ensenada, Mexico, was Lower Californian.
- Biographical / historical:
-
The newspaper collection underwent a major deaccession process and was completed in April, 2025. Holdings that were inventoried decades ago and shown at the California Newspaper Project (CNP) website http://cnp.ucr.edu/ are now out of date. (A search for Natural History Museum holdings at the Seaver Center can be filtered by typing in the institution field the following: "LA Natural History Museum.") Likewise, microfilm has also been weeded. Many damaged reels have been discarded, but reels still remain that require future assessment for condition. Select reels have been transferred to the Center for Bibliographical Studies and Research at the University of California, Riverside. The Seaver Center no longer has reader/printer equipment to view microfilm.
