The collection consists of letters from physician and gold miner Luther Fitch to his father, Luther Fitch (1783-1870), and family in Maine. The letters describe his voyage to and life in California. There are also later letters, from 1872 to 1873, written by his nephew, Luther E. Fitch, who was also in California.

Luther Fitch, M.D., (1821-1891) joined the California Gold Rush in 1850. He left Portland, Maine, and traveled via the Isthmus of Panama to Foster's Bar in Yuba County, California, where he practiced as a physician and mined for gold from 1851 to 1865.
