Background

Scope and content:

Letter written on Southern Pacific letterhead by Geo[rge Augustus Heintz] on August 9, 1906 requesting money from [unknown person, letter is damaged]. This letter was found in the walls of the house at 227 Q Street in Sacramento California when the house was being remodeled in 2019.

The letter describes how Heintz has been nursing his wife and baby and they are now doing better. He is ready to come back to Columbia, Nevada if the recipient of the letter can send him $100 to pay a few bills and arrange for his fare.

The letter is damaged and missing two large pieces. The name of the addressee is missing, but the readers is able to read the location of the receiptent is in Columbia, Nevada. The letter has been folded in half and then thirds, with two pieces the size of a quarter, missing. The letter is signed Geo. at #227-Que St., Sacto. Since the letter was found at this address, it is possible that the letter was not mailed.

Biographical / historical:

George Augustus Heintz was born in September 30, 1872. He lived at 227 Q Street in Sacramento from 1902-1907 and was employed by the Southern Pacific Company. After 1907, he moved back to San Francisco where he was a clerk for the railroad. George and his wife Mary Veronica had four children; Catherine (approx. 1900-1980), Marie (approx. 1904-1947), Georgia (July 1906-1972) and John/George (approx. 1908-1954). Mr. Heintz died on March 17, 1925.
