Background

Scope and content:

A collection of 53 items which consists of letters and documents related to Ann Lake and her family. Many of the letters discuss family life in Pennsylvania and Ohio as well as various family members. There are also some letters about the Civil War (including one by John Shaw Billings) and one letter each from Benjamin Franklin Shumard and George G. Shumard regarding explorations in the West. Other correspondents in the collection include Dr. Jacob Newton Brown and Ann Lake's second husband, Andrew Leech.

Biographical / historical:

Ann Getz Hutchinson Leech Lake, a native of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, was born in approximately 1800. She also lived in Baltimore, Maryland, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Cincinnati, Ohio and owned a millinery business. She moved to California in 1861 to live with her daughter, Anna C. Hutchinson Brown; her daughter's husband was Dr. Jacob Newton Brown, who practiced medicine in San Jose. After arriving in 1861, Ann married for the third time to S.S. Lake and lived in Centerville, California.
