Bartlett's 4th volume of his Diary, subtitled "Garabaldi's Own or a Trip around the Horn" covers the time period from Nov 12, 1852 to Nov 11, 1856. Bartlett leaves Kingston, MA to travel around the Horn on the "Duchess D Orleans" arriving in San Francisco on May 9, 1853 after a trip of 157 days. He spends the majority of his time in mining camps in the vicinity of the Tuolumne River and then tries his luck in the northern mines around Placerville. The Diary ends on November 11, 1865, with Bartlett continuing mining with very little success. Mining camps where Bartlett worked include Sonora, Curtis Creek,Little Chilli Gulch, Turnback Creek, Red Mountain, Hawkins Bar, Rock Springs, Willow Bar, Poverty Hill, Big Tree, Calaveras County, Murphy's Camp, Placerville, Georgetown, Marmaluke and Coloma.
The work was hard and for the most part unrewarding. He says at one point, "I want to go home, California hold no charm for me."
He reports on the Assasination of James King of William by James Casey and the reformation of the Vigilance Committee.
The diary contains 4 hand drawn pencil sketches by Noah Burgess. One the the Duchess d'Orleans on the Equator, another of the ship off Cape Horn and a third off Point Conception. The last sketch is of "Gasser's Retreat" a mining cabin where Bartlett stayed.
