Background

Scope and content:

The collection consists of official survey reports (nos. 1-2) of some of the earliest Japanese immigrant community and new settlement areas for future Japanese settlements from the São Paulo state, Brazil in 1911-1912, with Fujita's personal notes; classified documents dispatched from the Japanese embassy in Brazil to Japan; letters addressed to Foreign Minister Uchida, Kosai in Japan; and a letter of Tokyo Imin Kaisha (Tokyo immigrant agency). Also included are photographs of European settlements in the state of São Paulo, agricultural maps of Sao Paolo, a draft contract for Japanese settlers in Liberdade (in Japanese and Portuguese), and a Liberdade settlement plan proposal.
