This collection contains 136 letters, broadsides, circulars, blank government forms, and lithographs describing the political and military activities of the Mexican state Nuevo Le贸n from 1853 to 1878. Some of the people represented throughout the collection include Santiago Vidaurri, Ignacio Comonfort, Pedro de Ampudia, Jes煤s Mar铆a Aguilar, Juan de Dios Villalon, and Juli谩n Quiroga. The manuscripts and broadsides from the 1850s detail governmental policies and the administration of Nuevo Le贸n as well as military issues such as condemning deserters. Correspondence, circulars, and proclamations during the 1860s include information about the intensity of the revolution, economic hardships, political elections, changing laws, taxes, commerce, changing political leadership, and military routes. There are two lithographs, the first depicts Maximilian I and his wife Charlotte of Belgium, and the second is titled Last Moments of Maximilian, Emperor of Mexico.
- Biographical / historical:
-
In the mid-19th century, the northern Mexican state Nuevo Le贸n played a large role in armed conflicts such as the Reform War (1857-1861) and the Second Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). The Reform War is also known as the Mexican Civil War and was fought between liberal and conservative coalitions over the Constitution of 1857. In 1861, negotiations broke down between Mexico, Spain, Great Britain, and France over the collection of Mexican debts and France invaded Mexico in 1862. The French eventually formed the Second Mexican Empire and established Archduke Maximilian as emperor of the Second Mexican Empire, which lasted until 1867. Benito Ju谩rez led the opposition to French rule from Nuevo Le贸n until 1864 when he was driven out by the French and the state fell to French control until the restoration of the Mexican Republic in 1867. Prior to the French taking control of the state, political leaders in Nuevo Le贸n such as Santiago Vidaurri met with representatives of the Confederate States of America to discuss trade and possibly joining the Confederacy.
